Chapter I · Beginnings

Yeshiva & Semicha

[Draft — to refine after speaking with the family.] The Rav's formative years, the yeshivos that shaped him, the rebbeim who left their fingerprints on his learning, and the moment he understood that his life would be spent on the building side of Klal Yisrael — this section will tell that story with the care it deserves.

ב
Chapter II · London

The Beth Din Years

Before Berlin there was London. Working in close partnership with the venerated Dayan Chanoch Ehrentreu zt"l, Rabbi Halpern absorbed the rhythms of a working Beth Din: the questions that reach a Dayan's desk, the patience required to answer them well, and the discipline of treating every she'eilah as if it were the only one.

What began as an apprenticeship became a partnership. The Dayan's influence on the Rav is woven through everything that came afterward — including the kashrus standards he would later bring back to Berlin's Beit Midrash, organising seminars in conjunction with the KLBD (Kashrus London Beth Din) for the next generation of European rabbis in training.

Chapter III · Berlin

Rosh Beit Midrash, the Rabbinerseminar

In 2010, the Rav accepted the position of Rosh Beit Midrash at the Rabbinerseminar zu Berlin — the historic seminary first founded by Rabbi Esriel Hildesheimer in 1873, and re-established in our generation to train Orthodox rabbis for German-speaking communities.

For twelve years he led the Beit Midrash. Many of his talmidim were themselves recent arrivals from the former Soviet Union — men who had come to Yiddishkeit late and were now preparing to lead others home. The Rav met them where they stood and walked them, patiently, the rest of the way.

Alongside Dayan Ehrentreu, he conferred semicha on a new generation of European rabbinic leadership — a generation that today serves communities in Berlin, Hamburg, Frankfurt, Munich, Vienna, and beyond.

A Sacred Partnership

Dayan Chanoch Ehrentreu zt"l.

To understand Rabbi Halpern's derech, one must understand the man who shaped it. Dayan Ehrentreu zt"l — born in Frankfurt, raised in England, and one of the towering halachic figures of his generation — served as Dean of the Rabbinerseminar and was a lifelong mentor to the Rav.

They worked side by side for years, conferring authority on rabbis whose communities now stretch across a continent that, two generations ago, lay in spiritual ruins. Their partnership was the quiet engine of a much louder revival.
